Music
plays an important part in the life of City United Reformed Church.
Within worship, we draw upon a wide variety of styles and traditions.
We are, of course, a diverse bunch of people, and it seems natural
that this diversity would be reflected in the range of music, which
we hope draws us together as a worshipping community. Our love and
respect for our musical heritage is reflected by the fact that traditional
and contemporary hymns from the denominational hymn book Rejoice
and Sing account for the core of the congregation's repertoire.
Alongside these, though, we include elements of world music, jazz,
Taizé and songs from the Iona community and other contemporary,
international and ecumenical sources.
We try to make
musical activities open to everyone at City, believing that they
should not be reserved for skilled and experienced musicians. Although
we care about the quality of the music we make in worship, musical
'standards' are not pursued to the exclusion of all else. It is
more important to us that music is made to be a meaningful experience
for as many people as possible.
Led by our Music Director, Myfanwy Gibson-Evans, the
Music Group, a mixed bag of instrumentalists
and singers, varies in number between (approximately!) 3 and 8,
according to the availability of its members. It takes part in many
services, leading the congregational singing, introducing new songs
and contributing items of its own to support the theme of the service. The Music Group normally rehearses at 5.30 p.m. every Wednesday and gathers at 9.45 a.m. before the Sunday
service for warming up. Other occasional sessions are held to try out new music and plan the
season ahead. They are always looking for new voices and new instrumentalists.

The church has
a fine three manual organ, (originally by Norman and Beard and rebuilt
by the Dean Organ Builders in 1985) and a Blüthner grand piano.
These instruments are often used for rehearsals and concerts. |
