KID STUFF

How we made the masks for our 2006 Palm Sunday service.

First, make sure everyone is wearing an apron. You can
make aprons from bin bags by cutting holes for head and arms.

We used cheap terre cotta clay to make the faces for the masks, then we covered them with cling film before applying five layers of paper strips soaked in PVC glue (papier mache):

When the papier mache is completely dry (after about two days), lift them gently off the clay and remove the cling film. Use a nail or star-headed screwdriver to make holes for the eyes and to tie on elastic string to hold the mask on the head. These holes should be aligned with the eyes so that the elastic will fit over the top of the ears. Then paint them. We used acrylic paint, but you can also use cheaper poster paint.
