THE BIBLE AS LITERATURE
Lecturer Rev Dr Tom Arthur;
a CACEC Course

Mondays, 7.30 - 9.30 pm starts 22nd September

Fee: £20 (concessions £14)
10 weeks

Most explorations of the Bible ask what it means. In this course we will ask how it means. Studying the Bible as literature helps us develop a form of biblical literacy that is more than familiarity with biblical content. Biblical literacy needs to include understanding the literary conventions and techniques that constitute biblical writers' tools for constructing meaning. The interest in this course will be in discovering a literary tool kit from biblical times far different from our own, and in gaining a deeper appreciation for how skilful biblical authors were in using these tools.

Tom Arthur is the minister at City United Reformed Church. In addition to his theological studies he has a PhD in English Literature and an MA and BA in comparative literature. Before entering the ministry he taught Shakespeare and modern fiction at Loyola University in Chicago.
