Courses

Join us in the church coffee shop for a light meal and an exploration of Christianity as a way of life. The course is designed for those who are entirely new to Christianity--who don't know whether the Gospel of John is in the New Testament or the Old--but has also been set up for those who have been on this journey for a while but would like to have another look at the road map. It's about how to read the Bible and how to think theologically, but the primary focus is on who we are and what we do as those who follow in the way Jesus taught and lived.
From time to time an extended series of meetings for learning like this is planned. In autumn 2003 we had a course on looking at Christmas from an adult perspective, a dry-run for an on-line course (see above), which started out as a "Table Talk" session. Summer 2004 we looked at issues relating to death and bereavement. For our autumn 2004 series on The Heart of Christianity City Church was joined by URC and Methodist memebrs from Barry churches, about 30 in all. This series was repeated in 2006. In November 2005 we had a series on prophecy looking at the Victorian Nine Lessons and Carols tradition in the light of contemporary understanding (see above e-learning). Ring the church office on (029) 2022 5190 for current details, venues, etc., which will be announced on the back of our weekly worship sheet.Look for announcements in the calendar section of this Web site. And of course many of our members take advantage of further study opportunities available through the CACEC programme.

The Prophetic Imagination and Nine Lessons and Carols Table Talk 12 noon Sundays
“Table Talk” gathers after worship on Sundays, usually
about 12 noon after people have had the chance to have a chat and
a cup of coffee/tea in the Refectory. We often follow the theme
of the day’s service, but sometimes opt for pursuing the specific concerns of those gathered.
Table Talk sessions try to break through the rigidity of our pre-conceptions
with problem-solving, role-play and other forms of creative engagement,
but most of the time the format is simply the kind of from-the-heart,
candid discussion of basic issues that can take place in spaces
that are as safe as this one. Bring a sandwich!
Coffee evenings
Most months there is a series of coffee evenings in various homes,
gathered around topics of mutual concern. We’ve used this
format in recent months to look at models for understanding God;
to look at models of belief implied by the plots of the television
programmes, movies and cartoons of popular culture; and met recently
to discuss the challenge of being an Open and Affirming church.
In Lent 2003 we watched and discussed Chocolat, Dead Man Walking,
Last Orders, Insomnia and Castaway. In Lent 2004 we wrote a home-grown lectionary-based study giving biblical perspectives on our contemporary globalised, urban life. For Lent 2005 we had a series of sessions with church leaders from other denominations in the city centre, inviting them to share with us what seemed to them to be the most important issues in their ministry.
